    Changing your password:

There are two databases that house authentication data.  We have made your username the same for both accounts.  You probably will want to keep both of your passwords the same for convenience in accessing resources.  If the resource is housed at Earlham College it requires and Earlham College password.  If the resource is housed by the seminaries, it requires a seminary password.  The tools for both are listed below.  We recommend that you make both of your passwords the same and that if you change one, you change the other to match it.

    Password changing tools:

Password changing tool for Earlham College housed resources including Email, Library and Earlham College Computer Labs.

    Earlham College's Password Management System.

Password changing tool for Seminary housed resources including scs.earlham.edu, sas.earlham.edu and Moodle.

    Choosing a secure password

For a password to work properly, it must be something which you will remember, and which other people don't know and can't guess. Having trouble thinking up a password? You can find an article here about selecting a secure password - just make sure your chosen password isn't one of these most commonly used passwords!

    Help! I've forgotten my password!

You'll need to contact the SCS Helpdesk by or to be issued a new password. Please give us your, your, and a phone number where you can be reached. We will give new passwords by phone or in person, not by email.

Cookies and firewalls: Common login problems

Moodle uses a "tracking cookie" to increase security. Your web browser must be set to allow cookies from our Moodle site, http://scs.earlham.edu. Follow these links for information on enabling cookies in several Windows browsers and in Safari on Mac OSX.

Moodle also needs to know where a login attempt is coming from (i.e. the "referring page" or "referrer"). Some firewalls intentionally block this information. You should be able tooverride the firewall setting for our Moodle site (http://moodle.scs.earlham.edu/) without otherwise compromising your computer's security. (Note that the address does not begin with "www"!). Consult your firewall's tech support resources for instructions.

If you use Norton Personal Firewall/Norton Internet Security The instructions for Norton Personal Firewall 2003/2004 can be found here (or could when we wrote this), and may help to explain the issue.

If you use a ZoneAlarm firewall

    To enable cookies:

    1. Open ZoneAlarm
    2. Go to Privacy/Main
    3. Set Cookie Control to "Off"

To allow Moodle to see "referrer" information:

    1. Open ZoneAlarm Privacy properties
    2. On the Site List tab click Add button and add the site address (moodle.scs.earlham.edu) to the list
    3. Once listed, right click the site and select Options from the context menu
    4. In the Site Options property window uncheck everything on the Ad Blocking tab and then click Apply.

If you have other questions please contact the SCS Helpdesk. Whether you use the phone or email it is critical that you leave your full name and a phone number where you can be reached. Anonymous or semi-anonymous appeals for help will be ignored!
