Mailing Lists at ESR and Bethany

    The Lists

There are several electronic mailing lists for general seminary use, including three comprehensive lists for the student body (one for each seminary and one for both). Details on these lists are available at the description of the seminary email list structure.

    Posting guidelines

Guidelines for posting to the lists are based on common courtesy and awareness of the fact that the lists address a broad and diverse audience. Here are the current guidelines:

    1. All postings should contain a subject line with a concise description of the contents.
    2. Notices which are appropriate for This Week In Common should be posted there, not on the lists.
    3. Students may not post directly to any of the employee lists, nor should anyone effectively duplicate a large portion of the seminary lists for the purpose of mass mailing. Options for students who want to reach a broad audience are to post messages to This Week in Common, or send the message to a faculty member who may, at his or her discretion, forward it to the appropriate list or lists. (Students serving in staff position or acting as faculty proxies and posting messages as part of their responsibility in that function are not considered students for the purposes of this guideline.)
    4. Avoid posting attachments to the lists - use links instead.
    5. Avoid political messages. They may be perceived as institutional stands on an issue.
    6. Do not post email petitions. (They are of dubious value and usually hoaxes.)
    7. Do not forward messages to the list; copy and paste the pertinent parts into a new message
    8. Do not post virus warnings or other computer advice to the list; forward it to SCS instead.
    9. Always sign your full name.
    10. Be kind.

Technical note: Thelist security will only allow list members to post to the list from the account with which they are subscribed. In practice, this means that even if you have your seminary (@earlham.edu or @bethanyseminary.edu) email forwarded to another address, you will still need to use your seminary account to sendmail to the lists.
