  • SCAM: "Account Update"

Here's the latest phishing scam directed at Earlham email users:

    Subject: Account Update
    From: "Earlham.Edu Webmail Service" <upgrade @earlham.edu>
Reply-To: verification103 @live.com (First clue - not only does the "Reply-To" not match the "From" address, but the "Reply-To" isn't an @earlham.edu address. Why would any Earlham folks need to send a message from "verification103@live.com"?)

(The rest is pretty typical of this sort of scam - poor spelling and grammar, and an urgent need for a response)

This mail is to inform all our {Earlham.Edu} users that we will be upgrading our site in a couple of days from now. If you are a user of our site you are required send us your Email account details so as to enable us know if you are still making use of your mail box. Further be informed that we will be deleting all mail account that is not functioning so as to create more space for new user. so you are to send us your mail account details which are as follows:

    Name:
Password: (Here's the big giveaway - why would anybody who controls the mail server need to know what your password is? Wouldn't just replying to he message be a clear sign that you were using your account?)

Remember: neither SCS nor ECS will ever ask you for your password, especially not in an email!
