  • Changing the keyboard layout in Ubuntu (8.04)

Installing a new keyboard layout in Ubuntu is extremely simple, but I couldn't find any step-by-step instructions on the process, so here they are!

    1. Click System > Preferences > Keyboard.
    2. Click the "Layouts" tab.
    3. Click the "Add..." button.
    4. Select the appropriate country from the "Layouts" drop-down list and click "Add".
    5. Click "Close".

You'll probably also want to add the "Keyboard Indicator" applet to one of your 'panels':

    1. Right-click on an empty space on any of your panels (the grey bars along the top and bottom of the screen, unless you've moved them!) and click "Add to Panel...".
    2. Find the "Keyboard Indicator" applet in the list, and use your left mouse button to drag it onto a panel.
    3. Click "Close".

Now you can toggle through your installed layouts by clicking on the applet icon!
