    Update: This issue appears to be solved - contact us if you're still having trouble.

    If you've discovered that you can't send email from your desk this morning, you're not alone! You may see an error message about a certificate having expired or STARTTLS being unavailable at the mail server. It's an issue at the mail server; Earlham Computing Services is working to solve the problem, and hopes to have mail flowing properly again sometime this morning soon (Webmail is unaffected). We'll update this post when the problem is solved.

    Update:  No resolution as of 8am 26 January 2009. See below for instructions on changing your email client configuration to allow you to send mail

    Thunderbird

    1. Click Tools > Account Settings....
    2. Select the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" entry in the left column.
    3. In the middle column, select the entry for mailer.earlham.edu and
      click "Edit...".
    4. Change the "Use secure connection:" setting to "TLS, if available"
    5. Click OK and OK.

    Eudora

    1. Click Tools > Options....
    2. In the left column, select "Sending Mail".
    3. In the middle, change the "Secure Sockets when Sending" setting
      to "If Available, STARTTLS".
    4. Click Close.
