Email forwarding is out of order

    in

Automatic email forwarding from @earlham.edu and @bethanyseminary.edu accounts via Webmail is out of order for nearly all users*. Earlham Computing Services is working on the problem, but they have no time estimate for a solution.

We recognize that many seminary folks rely on this feature to allow them to check their seminary email account from another email account. There are three options for people who have been forwarding their mail:

More options for retrieving seminary email

Automatic forwarding of @earlham.edu and @bethanyseminary.edu mail is still broken in WebMail, so we've added more instructions for retrieving your mail with Yahoo and GMail accounts. Enjoy!

Update: This issue appears to be solved - contact us if you're still having trouble.

Graph of spam traffic - average of 683 spams rejected per minute

As I noted in an earlier post, the amount of spam that we turn away at our network perimiter started to increase in early December, settling in at an average of around 250,000 messages a day. Yesterday, we saw a spike in those numbers, rejecting 984,386 spam messages in one 24 hour period.

    Spam is rising

    in

Just in time for the holidays (and exams!) - we're seeing a 37% increase in the amount of spam that attempts to enter our network compared to this time last week. Why do spam rates continue to rise? Because spamming is still quite proffitable; a recent study showed that spammers can make very good money with a response rate of 1 in 12.5 million.

    New features in Moodle 1.9

Since the recent server upgrade, we are using the latest version of Moodle (1.9). As always, there have been many behind-the-scenes fixes and performance enhancements, but there are also several new features worth mentioning.

    Server upgraded

Moodle should now be running much faster, thanks to a brand new server which went live today (for technical details, click "Read More"). You should notice a marked improvement in Moodle's response time. We were also able to enable some new Moodle features that were not workable on the older server, including "drag and drop" reordering of course resources and blocks. As always, if you have problems with Moodle, let us know!

    Moodle is working again!

    All,

Moodle is finally working again! I apologize that you didn't receive notification of the outage by email; unfortunately, the same attack that put Moodle out of commission also knocked out our email lists.

If you run into any ongoing problems with Moodle or other seminary websites, please call or email the SCS Helpdesk (765-983-1568, help@scs.earlham.edu).

    Thanks again for your patience!

Changing the keyboard layout in Ubuntu (8.04)

Installing a new keyboard layout in Ubuntu is extremely simple, but I couldn't find any step-by-step instructions on the process, so here they are!

    1. Click System > Preferences > Keyboard.
    2. Click the "Layouts" tab.
    3. Click the "Add..." button.
    4. Select the appropriate country from the "Layouts" drop-down list and click "Add".
    5. Click "Close".

You'll probably also want to add the "Keyboard Indicator" applet to one of your 'panels':
