Rachel's interest in the death penalty and prisons began at an early age. When she was 12, she read a book written by then-governor of Ohio called The Power of Life and Death, chronicling his struggle with the death penalty. Ten years later, she married someone who had spent time in prison, giving her a closer look at prison life. Together, they began the Death Row Support Project in 1978.
